Why did you decide to become a foster carer?
Through my employment I have become aware of young people currently in residential care who would benefit greatly from being part of a family unit; one where they can experience a family life different to the one they experienced previously.
In addition my nan fostered over 150 young people over her lifetime so was always an inspirational role model to me.
What was the assessment process like for you?
The assessment process was long and very in depth however I had an excellent assessor who made the whole experience easier for me. We talked a lot about my early childhood and how I had been parented along with what I thought my own parenting style would be like. The questions my assessor asked really made me think and she also set me homework!
I attended Skills to Foster, a two day compulsory training course with other applicants during my assessment which was enjoyable and very insightful.
Did you ever have second thoughts while you were being assessed?
Yes. I was worried about the possibility of any incidents and how they might affect me if they did arise. I was able to discuss my concerns with my assessor and she helped put my mind at ease. My supervising social worker (allocated when I was approved) also helps me with any queries I have.
In your opinion is it important for foster carers to have flexibility in the workplace?
I usually work shifts however I can be on call 24 hours a day. Consequently flexibility is vital and the understanding of my employer is paramount to my ability to be a foster carer
